Town of Lee Mechanic/Equipment Operator
Position Overview:
The ideal candidate is proficient in working with diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic systems, and has hands-on experience in maintaining and repairing tractors, dump trucks, balers, trash compactors, heavy equipment, and other related vehicles and equipment.
Duties Summary:
Under limited supervision, performs a wide variety of mechanical work on light, medium, and heavy vehicles and equipment. Additional duties may be required within the scope of the classification.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Mechanic performs journey-level work in the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, and other motorized equipment.
Essential Duties:
- Plowing snow during winter storms, ensuring that the town roads, parking lots, and other essential areas are cleared efficiently and safely. This includes operating snowplows and other equipment, applying salt and sand as needed, and ensuring all areas are accessible for public safety. Snow removal duties may require working in extreme weather conditions and long hours to meet emergency and public safety needs.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment, including systems such as transmissions, diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulics, fuel supply, ignition, suspension, air conditioning, cooling, electrical, and exhaust.
- Estimate the time and materials required for repairs.
- Order parts and supplies, and complete necessary repairs.
- Inspect vehicles and related systems (mechanical, electronic, electrical) to identify parts, tools, and service needs.
- Overhaul or rebuild engines and hydraulic devices, fabricating parts and materials as necessary.
- Inspect and road test completed work to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards before returning units to service.
- Conduct maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, light and medium-duty trucks, and other motorized equipment.
- Respond to emergency service calls on a call-out basis and work outside of regular hours when necessary.
- Adhere to standard operating procedures and safety practices.
- Perform periodic safety inspections, identifying and correcting any hazards.
- Work with the highway crew and assist at the transfer station as required.
Hourly Pay:
The hourly starting rate for this position is $30.50 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Employees are paid bi-weekly on Fridays via direct deposit.
Work Hours:
This is a full-time position with regular working hours from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Flexibility is required, as this position may require working outside of standard hours including evenings, weekends, or on-call duties, especially during snow removal or emergency service needs.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have a combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position effectively. A typical combination includes:
- Knowledge of:
- Operation of various heavy and light equipment and vehicles.
- Maintenance of diesel engines, mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic systems.
- Use of electronic and computerized automotive diagnostic equipment.
- Basic preventive maintenance techniques for assigned equipment.
- Occupational hazards and safety practices related to vehicle maintenance.
- Ability to:
- Read and follow manufacturers' maintenance manuals.
- Troubleshoot and resolve daily maintenance issues related to equipment, materials, and methods.
- Operate personal computers and specialized fleet maintenance software.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Use hand and power tools, as well as diagnostic equipment.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public in the course of work.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Reside within 30 minutes of the Lee Highway Garage.
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience:
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible diesel and/or heavy equipment maintenance experience, including work with hydraulic systems.
- License:
- Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) at the time of hire.
Physical Tasks & Environmental Conditions:
This position involves moderate to heavy physical work in both a shop environment and outdoor field conditions, including exposure to hazardous machinery, chemicals, infectious diseases, and potential physical harm. Frequent tasks include standing, stooping, bending, walking, lifting objects up to 50 pounds, and other similar actions.
Special Conditions:
This position is deemed safety-sensitive under Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, and is subject to drug and alcohol testing.
