About Barrington

Barrington is a large bedroom community of more than 9,600 residents spanning nearly 50 square miles.  Approximately 10% (by value) of developed land is commercial and 90% is residential.  Barrington is a desirable community located just inland of New Hampshire’s seacoast and is 30 miles east of Concord and 75 miles north of Boston.  Barrington has an SB2 Town Meeting form of government with a Town Administrator and five-member Select Board.  The Select Board appoints seven Planning Board members (plus alternates) and five Zoning Board of Adjustment members (plus alternates).  The Land Use Office is comprised of a full-time Town Planner and full-time Administrative Assistant.  The incumbent Administrative Assistant has decades of experience and is eager to support the next Planner with a wealth of institutional knowledge. The work of the Land Use Office is complimented by consultants, including a $100,000 grant-funded project currently underway.  The Land Use Office is at the newly constructed Town Hall and located adjacent to the Building/Assessing Departments.  These departments enjoy a strong working relationship with each other.

Land Use Office Activity

The availability of housing in the region has facilitated significant residential development interest in Barrington.  As development has occurred, the Planning Board and staff have maintained a balanced approach of recommending proactive and reactive adjustments to the zoning ordinance and regulations (subdivision and site plan review).  These updates are driven by a regularly updated Master Plan and Capital Improvements Plan.  Application and zoning amendment data from 2022-2024 is listed below:

  • 2024: 62 applications, including: 10 subdivisions, 6 site plan reviews, and 13 variances
    • 19 zoning amendments
  • 2023: 73 applications, including: 2 subdivisions, 16 site plan reviews, and 15 variances
    • 6 zoning amendments
  • 2022: 78 applications, including: 6 subdivisions, 19 site plan reviews, and 11 variances
    • 13 zoning amendments
