POSITION: Assistant Recreation Director DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Director Parks & Recreation
GENERAL SUMMARY
Responsible to the Recreation Director for planning, organizing, scheduling and executing recreational programming for the community of Farmington.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Creates, plans and implements a variety of special events, activities and programs.
- Serves as program supervisor as necessary.
- Assists in preparing the department annual budget and recommends program expenditure.
- Collects and interprets relevant data.
- Plans, organizes, schedules, implements and evaluates activities, programs and events for the department.
- Collects and records revenue.
- Performs special assignments to include researching and preparing reports and projects.
- Attends meetings, trainings and conferences as required to keep up with trends, best practices and to improve programs, facilities and ensure the health and safety of participants, volunteers and staff.
- Represents department to other communities and agencies when directed by Recreation Director.
- Provides supervision, observation and participation as necessary for Recreation Dept. activities, events and programs.
- Responds to public inquires and complaints; promotes and maintains positive community relations.
- Develops new recreational activities to meet the needs of the community, while enhancing existing programs.
- Conducts registrations for all programs, including youth sports and summer camps, adult and special programs.
- Coordinates and reserves indoor and outdoor facilities.
- Creates, maintains and distributes publicity brochures, notices and forms.
- Responsible for building scheduling.
- Collects and maintains registration, medical and liability forms.
- Responsible for maintaining the department website.
- Assists in hiring, recruiting, training and evaluating staff; supervises and evaluates program staff; recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates volunteers.
- Performs limited maintenance duties, such as installing goals, nets etc., repairing equipment and maintaining facilities.
- Ensures all safety rules and regulations are followed.
- Fundraising and soliciting sponsorship for events and programs.
- Maintain relationship with key stakeholders.
- Equipment ordering and inventorying.
- Represents the Department in the Recreation Director’s absence.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs other related duties as requested.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Associate’s degree with 3 years’ experience in recreation program administration is preferred or Municipal experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- General office and strong computer skills.
- Ability to communicate, work with and direct people of all ages.
- Ability to speak and write effectively.
- Ability to both lead and work in a cooperative team environment.
- Knowledge of child development.
- Knowledge of risk management.
- Knowledge of sports rules and regulations.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises program participants, volunteers and seasonal staff. Carries out all supervisory functions in accordance with Town rules, policies and applicable laws. Acts as the Director in the Director’s absence.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION
NH Driver’s license with a bus endorsement. American Red Cross CPR with AED and First Aide. DHHS Authorized Billing Agent.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Computers, software, related peripherals; Town Vehicles, two-way radios, hand tools, shovels, rakes, field lining equipment, sports equipment, maintenance equipment, first aid equipment, lifeguard equipment, and other miscellaneous sports, recreation and playground equipment necessary to complete tasks.

The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, and blood borne pathogens or other diseases. Work is performed in an office setting as well as at gymnasiums and outdoor playgrounds, beaches and a variety of other indoor and outdoor locations. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
The employee may be exposed to some mental stress due the need for attention to deadlines, the scope of responsibilities and exposure to the public. Frequent driving to various program sites or riding in vans or buses is required. Weekend, evening, and holiday hours are required in this position.
