The term "amicus brief" refers to a brief of an amicus curiae, which literally means "friend of the court." A person or organization that is not a party to a case, but has a strong interest in its outcome, may petition the court to file a brief as amicus curiae. NHMA often files amicus curiae briefs in the New Hampshire Supreme Court in cases that are of general significance to municipalties.
