 JOB TITLE:                Truck Driver / Laborer

SALARY:                       AFSCME, Local 1801 Collective Bargaining Agreement - Hourly step pay range for FY25 (7/1/24 – 6/30/25): $22.12 - $33.14

WORK SCHEDULE:  Full-time hourly position consisting of a regular workweek of forty-five (45) hours with overtime paid after forty (40) hours.

 JOB SUMMARY / SUPERVISION:  Performs laboring duties relating to road/site construction and maintenance and operates trucks and light equipment.

 ACCOUNTABILITY:  Reports directly to the Foreman, and is accountable to the Director of Public Works and Municipal Facilities.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following is illustrative of the duties and responsibilities associated with the position and are not intended to be all-inclusive.)

Performs laboring tasks associated with road/site construction and maintenance.

Operates all trucks and light equipment owned by the Town.

Operates on an emergency and seasonal basis, trucks and equipment for winter snow removal and other seasonal clean-up operations.

Performs preventative, routine maintenance on trucks and small equipment.

Performs traffic control functions at job site.

Familiar with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.

Attaches and removes snow plows and associated equipment from vehicles and performs snow plowing and salting/sanding operations or other activities to mitigate conditions caused by extreme weather conditions.

Establishes and maintains harmonious and effective working relationship with management, Town and department staff, elected officials, consultants, general public and contractors.

Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed and performs other duties as assigned by Highway Foreman.

 MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years’ experience in operating trucks and light duty construction equipment is required. 

 CERTIFICATION/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:  A valid driver’s license from state of residence is required.  Commercial driver’s license (type B with air brakes) without restrictions is required.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  Knowledge of operating trucks and light duty construction related equipment; knowledge of maintenance requirements of assigned equipment; knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety procedures and regulations associated with assigned equipment and operations; ability to perform strenuous physical work outdoors and under various weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to work effectively with management, town and department staff, and general public; and knowledge and experience in snow plowing and salt/sanding of roads.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Essential functions and duties of this position require outside and inside work environments.  Typical inside work environment conditions consist of cabs of equipment and trucks, concrete, vinyl flooring.  Typical outside work environment conditions consist of extreme temperatures, snow & ice, rain, dirt/dust, construction noise, vibrations, vehicular traffic, rough or wet slippery terrain, insects, poor ventilation, fumes and odors.

 SUMMARY OF OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:  May be exposed to cleaning fluids, dirt, dust, automobile fuel and lubricants, communicable diseases transmitted by humans and animals, fumes and hazardous materials that can affect respiratory system, eyes or skin.  May be exposed to herbicides, pesticides, fuel, paints, solvents, hydraulic fluids, and fertilizers.  May be exposed to long periods of sunlight.  May be exposed to poison ivy, oak, or sumac, and insects such as wasps, hornets, bees, etc.
