The Town of Lenox, Massachusetts is the cultural center of the Berkshires, the home of Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Shakespeare & Co., Edith Wharton’s “The Mount” and many other wonderful cultural venues that make our town a renowned destination for tourism.  Because of our proximity to Boston and New York, our population of 5,095 swells in the summer months to twice that, as people come to enjoy music, theatre, museums and the natural beauty of our lakes and mountains.  Lenox citizens take great pride in our town.  In addition to an active spirit of volunteerism, an appreciation of our rich local history and respect for our civic institutions, we place a high value on education, exemplified by the fact that our public schools consistently rank among the best in the State.  We are dedicated to providing a welcoming and vibrant community in which all may live and work.

The Town of Lenox is seeking an experienced leader to serve as its next Town Manager.  Acting as the Town’s Chief Administrative Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Procurement Officer, the Town Manager is responsible for working with the Select Board to develop consensus on a clear vision for the Town and implement policies to achieve that vision.  The Town Manager supervises department heads and works with them to establish short and long-range strategic goals.  The individual in this role is accountable for staff hiring, training, performance management, diversity and retention of our current 50 full time employees.  The ideal candidate must be a strategic thinker skilled at developing and balancing budgets ($35.4M for 2025, with a AAA bond rating from Standard & Poor’s) and one that seeks innovative financing options and revenue sources to maximize the Town’s success.  In addition the candidate should:

  • Demonstrate the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, staff, community groups, other jurisdictions, non-governmental organizations, private-sector entities, and the public.
  • Have a college degree at the bachelor level, possess a thorough knowledge of state and local laws pertaining to local government roles and responsibilities, as well as have a minimum of 3 years of municipal managerial experience.
  • be aware of the relevant amendments to the Town Manager Act of 1991, which were recently approved at the August 13, 2024 Special Town Meeting and include the following:
    • The residency requirement has been changed to: The Town Manager must be a resident of Berkshire County within one year of employment

This is full-time fully benefitted position. Salary: $140,000-$160,000 and negotiable based on qualifications and experience.
