TAX COLLECTOR - TOWN OF AMHERST, NH

The Town of Amherst’s Tax Collector, with 35+ years of longevity, is retiring. We are seeking a qualified individual for this soon-to-be vacated appointed position. We have an advantageous situation in that the new hire will have a bit of time to work together with our current Tax Collector.

This full-time, exempt role is crucial for managing the entire tax collection process, including property taxes, yield tax, current use tax, and more. The successful candidate will independently oversee various responsibilities, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This is a unique opportunity to contribute positively to the community of Amherst.  An understanding of local taxation and a commitment to public service are essential.

 Key Responsibilities:

·         Prepare and manage the annual budget for the Tax Office. 

·         Present collection reports to the Board of Selectmen and attend weekly department meetings. 

·         Supervise Deputy Tax Collector and monitor all tax collection processes. 

·         Manage tax lien processes, bankruptcy claims, and maintain accurate financial records. 

·         Respond to public inquiries and provide accurate information regarding tax assessments and collections. 

 Qualifications:

·         High school diploma required; advanced coursework in accounting or finance preferred. 

·         Some accounting experience (governmental accounting or taxation experience preferred). 

·         Knowledge of taxation laws, public relations, and modern office practices. 

·         Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
