Job Title: Solid Waste Facility Attendant-Operator

Department: Transfer Station

Reports To: Highway Supervisor

Status: Part-Time Starting from $16.00 an hour (Up to 20 hours a week – Wednesday & Sunday)

 

Job Summary 

Performs a variety of routine and skilled laboring duties involving the disposal of refuse, the separation of recyclable materials, and other functions related to the Transfer/Recycling Center, including assisting customers. 

Supervision Received 

Works under the direct supervision of the Highway Supervisor. Supervisor assigns work and reviews work in progress and/or completion. Supervisor provides instructions as necessary. Duties are performed to established and specified procedures, safety and care to be exercised in operating equipment. General supervision over part-time employees or on an as needed basis. 

Major Duties

1.     Knows, understands, and implements the Transfer/Recycling Center operating rules and procedures.

2.     Checks Permits for use of the facility by the public.

3.     Assists residents and commercial users in the appropriate placement of refuse and recyclable materials. Answer the public’s questions in person and over the telephone.

4.     Operates trash compactor, baler, Bobcat, and related equipment.

5.     Maintains the facility’s cleanliness and neatness; removes winter snow; beautifies grounds, including lawn and picking up loose refuse.

6.     Opens and closes buildings and gates according to schedule; guards against vandalism and unlawful entry by locking gates.

7.     Assists in all matters related to the operation of a Transfer/Recycling Center.

8.     Performs related work as required. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

1.     Knowledge of Town policies, procedures, ordinances, and State and Federal statutes.

2.     Knows, understands, and applies the operating rules and procedures of the Transfer/Recycling Center.

3.     Knowledge of light and heavy equipment application, maintenance and operation, building and grounds maintenance, and repair procedures.

4.     Skills in working on multiple and concurrent projects.

5.     Skills in the use of office equipment, computer, and Microsoft Office/other relevant software, register, calculator, and spreadsheets.

6.     Skill in public and interpersonal relations.

7.     Ability to organize time in order to meet daily task requirements.

8.     Ability to handle revenue, reconciliation, prepare deposits, general office filing on equipment, facility maintenance, and Vendor sheets.

9.     Ability to demonstrate good teamwork, interpersonal, and customer/public service skills and attitude.

10.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, town officials, property owners, contractors, the business community, the general public, and regional State and Federal officials. 

Qualifications 

·       High School diploma or equivalent.

·       Must possess a valid NH operator’s driver’s license with an acceptable safety record.

·       Must maintain a Principal Operator certificate as issued by the State of New Hampshire. Continuing Education through Training throughout the year.

·       Ability to pass drug and alcohol testing and adhere to the Town’s drug use policy.

·       Ability to work outdoors under extreme weather conditions. 

Physical Demands

·       Talking, listening, seeing, and smelling is required.

·       Physical effort is necessary for performing duties requiring walking, standing, bending, and lifting. May be required to exert significant physical effort, such as lifting and carrying heavy equipment and materials. (frequently up to 50 pounds and occasionally 75-100 pounds).

·       Regularly work outdoors under varying and extreme conditions.

·       May be exposed to excessive noise and disagreeable factors such as dust, dirt, herbicides, pesticides, fuels, solvents, household garbage, etc.

·       Work requires standing and walking on rough, wet, and slippery surfaces. Exposure to minor injuries such as cuts and bruises. Exposure to long periods of sunlight, wind, inclement weather, poisonous plants, insects, bees, etc.
