The Town of Deerfield is seeking applicants for a full-time Parks & Recreation Director to manage the Town’s recreation programs and oversee the Town’s Recreation Department; whose mission is to bring a wide variety of leisure programs to the community for all ages and abilities to enjoy. The successful candidate will develop recreation programs and facilities, establish and interpret policies, and develop short- and long-range plans. The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently with attention to detail; possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and be self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities. The candidate must have a flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary; the candidate must be physically able to perform all activities related to program preparation and facilitation. The candidate must have strong administrative proficiency and good organizational ability. The ideal candidate will be diplomatic and comfortable interacting with internal staff as well as residents. Experience in a municipal recreation program is highly desirable.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

· Plans, develops, coordinates, and implements a broad and diversified program of recreational activities and services to meet the needs of the public. Directs, schedules, monitors, and evaluates programs in terms of participant and parent satisfaction and budgetary, facilities, and staff needs and effectiveness. Updates policies to meet present demands and new laws.
· Prepares and administers the Department’s budget; manages the Parks and Recreation Revolving Fund; makes routine purchases and expenditures within spending guidelines. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment. Collects and accurately accounts for recreational revenues.
· Administers a sizable Summer Camp Program and Afterschool Program.
· Manages special projects and oversees facility upkeep for town fields and playgrounds.
· Submits quarterly and annual reports to Town Administrator; prepares reports for Recreation Commission meetings.
· Recruits, selects, trains, evaluates, and supervises staff and volunteers; schedules staffing. Direct reports include Assistant Director of P&R, Recreation Coordinator, 15-20 part-time/seasonal staff, and up to 100 youth sports volunteers annually.
· Cooperates and coordinates the Department’s services with other Town departments, including school district, and community groups; coordinates special events and the scheduling and use of community/school facilities and equipment; utilizes the Town’s resources, volunteers, organizations, and facilities.
· Sits on the Parks and Recreation (P&R) Commission, which serves as an advisory board to the department. Serves as liaison for Town Administrator with the P&R Commission; attends Recreation Commission’s monthly meetings; prepares Recreation Commission meeting agendas, posts meeting notices, and finalizes meeting minutes.
· Schedules any outside activities on Town recreational property, including school ballgames, lessons, and various league activities. Coordinates activities between Town leagues and inter-Town leagues as well as sports groups.
· Attends meetings of various civic or sports groups and any other meetings for direct recreational promotion or input.
· Has grant writing skills with a working knowledge of the processes involved with State and Federal grant writing.
· Maintains Department webpage and social media pages.
· Maintains and manages online registration program “recdesk”
Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Knowledge of the principles and objectives of recreation administration and of activities which make up a community program; knowledge of the facilities and equipment needed in a recreation program; knowledge of a wide variety of recreational activities; knowledge of human behavior as applied to various groups participating in recreational activities; knowledge of park and field maintenance; skill in working with people of all ages on a continuing basis. Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, direct, and evaluate the activities and personnel involved in a recreation program; ability to endure periods of heavy workload or excessive stress; ability to plan and exercise judgment in new or constantly changing problems; ability to formulate decisions and advise the Town Council on matters pertaining to Department policy; ability to develop and administer a budget and maintain records on the Department’s operations; ability to establish good community relations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, Town officials, civic organizations, and the public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Programming/Administration, Physical Education, or related field and at least five (5) years’ experience in recreation, including supervisory and administrative experience and youth programming experience; ability to become a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (NRPA) within twelve (12) months of employment; OR any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Training in CPR/AED/First Aid is required. Candidate must have the flexibility to work seasonal and irregular hours; including nights, weekends and some holidays. Candidate must possess basic computing and email skills necessary, with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Office hours are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm with flexibility to meet department and programming demands as needed.
