HOURLY RATE RANGE: $25.36-$27.43

ABOUT THE ROLE:   The Town of Salem is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join the Street/Shops team.  In this role, you will operate bulldozers, graders, excavators, snow removal equipment, rollers, cranes, loaders, street sweeper, and other types of heavy equipment in the construction and maintenance of streets, roads, sidewalks, and drainage. Shape and crown graveled streets and roads, excavate trenches for pipe laying, loads and unload vehicles. 

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO: (The following is a representative sample of the duties and responsibilities of the position and is not intended to be all-inclusive)
In this role, you will operate heavy equipment in connection with cutting banks, cutting, and filling ditches, removing stumps, snow and ice removal, and related Highway tasks. Inspect equipment on a regular basis before operation, perform routine preventative maintenance and additional responsibilities during snowstorms (sidewalks).


REQUIREMENTS: (The following is a representative sample of the duties and responsibilities of the position and is not intended to be all-inclusive)
Graduate of a senior high school or vocational school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At least one year of experience in the operation of specialized heavy motorized equipment, or two years’ experience in the operation of any type of automotive equipment and good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy motorized equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be dependable and willing to work under all weather conditions. 
  • Must demonstrate leadership skills.
  • Must respond to emergency situations.
  • Must be in good physical condition and able to perform manual labor, sometimes under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to provide support to other departments within the Town.
  • Must be a positive team player who consistently exhibits a professional and courteous manner.
  • *Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

What We Offer:  Benefits provided by the Town are described in the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement, and includes the following:

$62.81/ week for family coverage; HMO $135.36
$46.50/week for 2-person coverage; HMO $98.01
$23.09/ week for single coverage. HMO $ 48.69

Dental Insurance- Employee pays: 
$11.71/ week for family coverage.
$5.06/ week for family coverage. 
$0.00/week for single coverage.
 

If an employee already has qualifying insurance, the Town pay $4,000 annually to waive coverage.

Disability Insurance – 70% of base wages for up to 26 weeks.
Life Insurance – Equal to base annual earnings.
New Hampshire Retirement System Group I – Defined benefit pension plan.
Tuition reimbursement for pre-approved courses.
Uniform Allowance.
