The Town of Barre Massachusetts population of approximately 5,530 residents is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Fire Chief/Emergency Management Director. Barre is a small community located 22 miles northwest of Worcester, MA. The Department covers a response area of 44.8 square miles and operates 12 pieces of apparatus from four fire stations. The Department has an ISO rating of Class 5 in the water district and Class 5Y out of the water district. The organization employs 6 full-time, 35 part-time and on-call employees. The Department responded to 1,635 calls in 2023 with 70% being EMS responses, and 30% being fires. The BFD operates with a 1.11 budget.
The Fire Chief is an integral part of the Town’s leadership team. Applicants must have or obtain certification as a Massachusetts registered EMT, have a minimum of ten years of fire service experience, five of which are in a responsible command position. An associate degree (or equivalent) in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, Homeland Security, Business or Public Administration is required (Bachelors preferred).
Candidates are required to have or obtain, NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, National EMT licensure (paramedic preferred), ProBoard certification as Firefighter I/II, Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Massachusetts Fire Prevention Officer credentialed at level I and Chief Fire Officer. Candidates must have or obtain a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License. Candidates must obtain required qualifications and be credentialed as a Massachusetts Fire Chief within 24 months of appointment. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Completion an associate’s degree and appropriate certifications/credentialing is required and must be obtained within a timeframe agreeable to the Selectboard.
Applicants must possess strong labor/management, leadership and communication skills and have a strong background in fire service operations and administration with a combination fire service organization. Residency is required within 15 miles of the Town of Barre within twelve months of appointment. Excellent benefit package, salary is negotiable depending upon experience, qualifications and education. Salary range to $101,000. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications. The Chief is a critical part of operational response and is on-call 24/7 and expected to work around the needs of the Town.
