Director of Public Works, Town of Littleton NH

The Town of Littleton New Hampshire is conducting a search for the position of Director of Public Works. The Director of Public Works is responsible for directing, coordinating and controlling the planning, design, construction, and inspection of all Capital Improvement Projects in the Town of Littleton NH and overseeing its three departments including highway, waste management, and the public sewage system. This is a non-union exempt position. 

Essential Duties

The Director of Public Works provides general oversight, direction and technical assistance to the departments the position manages: Highway Department, Facilities Maintenance, Wastewater Treatment Facility, Town Sewage Systems and continuing projects. Ensures all Capital Improvement Projects are planned, designed, and contracted in a technically competent and economical manner.  Additional supervisory duties include, but are not limited to, street maintenance, storm drainage maintenance, wastewater treatment infrastructure maintenance and contractual activities that meet established service, performance and cost standards. This individual is also responsible for the preparation of a five-year Capital Improvement Program for the Town and the preparation of an annual operating budget for the departments. 

Skills Sets and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s or Associate's degree in Construction and or Project Management preferred but not required, equivalent job experience in a Public Works department or Highway construction company is highly desired. 
  • Highly skilled in multi-project planning, scheduling and control; self-motivated.
  • Strong “Leadership” with an employee development acumen. 
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex human and political problems. 
  • Ability to communicate with others and to assimilate and understand information, in a manner consistent with the essential job functions. 
  • Ability to operate all machinery and equipment within the Public Works departments including office machines and computer software consistent with this position. 
  • Ability to make sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the skills, methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in construction, maintenance and repair of bridges, buildings, curbs, drainage, pathways, sewer lines, sidewalks, streets and related structures. 
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications; estimate and plan jobs, prepare reports, maintain records and coordinate with subcontractors. 
  • Must have environmental insight and expertise. 
  • Reports to Town Manager and upon request makes presentations as necessary to the Select Board and or the public.
