 POSITION:         DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

MECHANIC – FULL TIME, UNION

 SALARY:            $24.55-$36.27 per hour (based on qualif. and internal equity) – Excellent benefits & NH Retirement

 SUMMARY:

The Mechanic uses standard practices and techniques of automotive, truck and equipment repair for both gasoline and diesel engines and in the principle operation and repair of other systems found in vehicles, heavy trucks and construction equipment.  The Mechanic uses safe work techniques and must be skilled in the ability to adapt available repair tools and parts to a specific repair problem and be skilled in the use and care of hand and machine tools employed in engine repair and adjustment. The mechanic maintains effective working relationships with all constituents.

 TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Performs general repair work on light-duty and heavy-duty trucks, diesel and gasoline engines, tractors, automobiles and other Town equipment.
  • Repairs or replaces parts in drivetrain, fuel, electrical, exhaust, cooling, or other systems as necessary.
  • Perform engine overhauls.
  • Inspects, adjust, repairs, and overhauls brakes, ignition systems, differentials, and axle assemblies.
  • Tunes engines using standardized testing equipment.
  • Responds to emergency road calls for disabled Town  equipment.
  • Performs burning and welding.
  • May also perform other departmental tasks when not engaged as a mechanic.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED; and Vocational or technical training in automotive and equipment repair and maintenance OR, any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must hold a current valid New Hampshire driver’s license appropriate to the class of vehicles operated by the Mechanic.

Must have the ability to read and understand repair manuals and understand and follow complex oral and written instruction.

The Mechanic must be in appropriate physical condition and be able to perform strenuous manual tasks.
