Head Mechanic - Non-Union

POSITION:     DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

                               HEAD MECHANIC – FULL TIME, NON-UNION

SALARY:          $29.53 - $40.55 per hour (based on qualifications and internal equity) – Excellent benefits & NH Retirement

SUMMARY:

The Head Mechanic performs skilled maintenance and repair services on vehicles and equipment owned and operated by the Town. The Head Mechanic works under the general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent or other appropriate supervisory employee, and exercises judgement with respect to repair methods. The Head Mechanic exercises supervision over other departmental employees and oversees Motor Vehicle Inspections and database system. Seasonal overtime may be required.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

·         Supervises mechanics and other union personnel in assigned tasks.

·         Responds to emergency and after hour municipal vehicle and equipment failures.

·         Performs routine maintenance and repair work on light-duty and heavy-duty trucks, diesel and gasoline engines, tractors, automobiles, and other Town equipment.

·         Diagnoses, repairs, or replaces parts in drivetrain, fuel, electrical, exhaust, cooling, or other systems as necessary.

·         Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and overhauls brakes, ignition systems, differentials, and axle assemblies.

·         Tunes engines using standardized testing equipment.

·         Responds to emergency road calls for disabled Town equipment

·         Competent with the use of torches, stick welders, MIG welders and plasma cutters for fabrication.

·         Able to perform proper lift operations for vehicles, trucks, and equipment.

·         Performs annual State inspections of municipal vehicles.

·         Operates dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, and other moderately complex construction and maintenance equipment in connection with repairs and transportation.

·         Performs plowing and snow removal during winter operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.            High School diploma or GED

2.            3 – 5 years of vocational or technical training in automotive and equipment repair and maintenance.  ASE certifications are preferred.

3.            Must possess a valid NH commercial driver’s license, Class B REQUIRED (Class A preferred) with a tanker endorsement or ability to obtain endorsement within (6) months.

4.            Certified State of New Hampshire Motor Vehicle Inspector or ability to obtain within (6) months.

5.            Any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
