Deputy Planning Manager

JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Deputy Planning Manager position reports directly to the Planning Manager for specified and specialized section areas of the Planning Department. This position acts on behalf of Planning Manager in their absence and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to being crossed-trained in and performing the duties or one or more of the other Deputy Planning Managers in their respective absence. Incumbents of this position manage assigned staff and projects and attend and speak at public meetings that are televised and recorded. Incumbents must demonstrate both experience and knowledge of land development, zoning, land use permits, historic preservation, environment, comprehensive and area planning, urban design, and real estate laws in their respective area(s) and in writing and reviewing legal contracts, documents, and easements. Position supervises and coordinates the assigned process with other relevant City Departments and outside review agencies/utilities. Incumbents of this position are responsible for providing quality customer service, responding to inquiries from the public related to land use regulations, and solving complex problems in a fast-paced environment with tight time schedules. This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, is part of the UAW Professional Bargaining Unit and provides an excellent work life balance. The position is grade 15, with a salary dependent upon experience.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) or equivalent from a college or university in planning, community development, landscape architecture, architecture, public administration, geography, or related field
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible related experience, supervisory experience desirable. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities required for the job
  • Principles and practices of municipal planning zoning, development regulations, and land use law
  • Working understanding of principles and practices of civil engineering, transportation engineering, architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, sociology, economic development, historic preservation, ecology and natural resources
  • Ability to interpret maps, topography, aerial imagery, government regulations, and technical procedures with a high degree of accuracy and understanding
  • Valid State Driver’s License
  • AICP, CNU-A, APA/NHPA/NNECAPA membership preferred
