Administrative Assistant - Fire Department

Town of Bedford

The Town's Fire Department is seeking a full-time Adminstrative Assistant.  The Adminsitrative Assistant has very diverse adminsitrative and financial duties and acts as the receptionist for the department. The sucessful candidate shall have knowledge of general office procedures, telephone systems, as well as basic to intermediate level Microsoft Office product computer skills.  He/she  must  be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing with all levels of Town employees, as well as the general public

The position accounts for all monies collected at the Fire department and prepares month end reports. Position responsibilities include a role in the payroll, purchasing and accounts payable processes in an automated financial system, issuing building, fire and health permits and coordinating requests for inspections. 

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:Duties require overall knowledge of bookkeeping and administrative skills and equivalent to completion of a high school diploma and two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must have working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, including the use of computers for data entry and management.  Knowledge of statutes, regulations, codes, policies, and procedures which pertain to the issuance of licenses, permits and the procedures that must be followed in order to process them.

Must have the ability to prioritize, organize, and perform work independently in a fast paced environment.

Any combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to the above qualifications will be considered.


Normal office environment, not subject to extremes in temperature, noise, odors, etc.

Regular interruptions to assist citizens.

May spend extended periods at terminal, on telephone, or operating other office machines, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.

Must be able to frequently lift and carry 10 and occasionally left 20lb of files, documents, records, etc.

Salary: $17.84 to $26.37 per hour
