Salary:  $55,000.00 - plus a comprehensive benefit package

General Statement of Duties:

Serves as a link and lead spokesperson between the Office of the Mayor and the community, media, and other government entities.  Focus is on the conveyance of public information, and the successful representation of the Office of the Mayor’s interests via social media and traditional news outlets. Act as liaison to constituents’ issues, answer questions, and address concerns. Develop and manage relationships with government agencies, elected officials' offices, and community-based organizations to help resolve constituent cases.

Examples of Essential Work:

  • Plans, designs, develops, disseminates, manages and implements communications and information programs via various media forms, which include news releases, social media platforms, videos, public service announcements (internet, television, and radio, including, but not limited to, the latest forms of technology), public information campaigns, and other marketing programs, activities and special projects;
  • Conducts on-camera, radio, and in-person interviews with members of the news media and public;
  • Sets and manages ongoing social media strategy for designated city department;
  • Manages and promotes citizen participation and community relations;
  • Develops and coordinates outreach events, meetings and programs;
  • Develops regional branding and standards for the department, including presenting information regarding departmental programs and services to various groups, committees, agencies, schools, and businesses;
  • Conveys information and provides education and awareness to citizens and business stakeholders regarding city initiatives through the creation and distribution of press releases, advertisements, and other forms of communication;
  • Conducts marketing research by developing surveys, studies and reports, evaluating information, utilizing information available from outside resources, and recommending new marketing programs;
  • Develops, fosters, and maintains professional relationships with representatives from all local media outlets;
  • Provides media training to employees;
  • Provides administrative support to the department by providing assistance to management staff, producing reports and presentations, giving advice about media issues, monitoring and developing web content to insure timely and accurate information, and consulting with departments on methods and strategies regarding public information activities;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
  • Act as a representative of the Mayor including answering casework correspondence, meeting or speaking with constituents, and serving as their liaison.
  • Assist with office and community events.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

Acceptable Experience and Training:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or related; or
  • Considerable experience in public speaking, and public relations, media relations, broadcast, or communications; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Special Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License;
  • Occasional weekend and after normal business hours.
